Do Aetna Medicare HMO plans require a referral?
Most – but not all – Aetna Medicare Advantage HMO plans require you to select a primary care physician (PCP) from a nationwide network of health care providers.
Your primary care physician helps coordinate most of your medical care. If more specialized treatment is necessary, your primary care physician will give you a referral to visit a specialist or hospital in the Aetna plan network.
In some limited instances – such as in an emergency – you may be able to receive out-of-network care. However, you are typically required to visit a provider within the network. The plan may also include in-network coverage when you travel in the US.
