Can I keep my doctor in a Medicare Advantage plan?
You may be able to keep your doctor in a Medicare Advantage plan.
It all depends on what Medicare Advantage plan you want and if your current doctor is in the plan’s network.
Types of Medicare Advantage Plans
The type of Medicare Advantage plan you choose may impact if you can keep your current doctor. It may also impact if you have to pay more to see your doctor.
HMO and PPO plans are the most common types of Medicare Advantage plans in the country.1
Aetna offers both HMO and PPO plans.
Each plan type has different rules about what doctors and medical facilities you can see. Some plans may even charge you more if you visit a doctor or medical facility outside of your network.
HMO Plans
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans offer multistate access to medical providers but have certain network restrictions. You may need to choose a primary care doctor and may need a referral to see a specialist. Usually you need to see providers in the plan’s network. In some cases, you may be able to receive out-of-network care for a higher cost.
PPO Plans
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans provide a larger multistate network than HMO plans and they allow you to access out-of-network providers. Using an out of network provider may cost more.
Plans that accept your current doctor
You can look for a plan that accepts your current doctor. To do so, compare multiple HMO and PPO plans at once.
Aetna® offers five types of Medicare Advantage Plans, some of which may include your current doctor in the plan’s network. These plans include the same benefits as Original Medicare. And they may include coverage for prescription drugs, preventive dental care, vision, wellness programs and a 24/7 nurse hotline.
