Does Aetna® Medicare cover acupuncture treatments?

Medicare Part B covers 12 acupuncture treatments in a 90 day period. If you show signs of improvement, Medicare may cover up to 8 additional treatments.

Medicare Advantage must cover everything that Original Medicare covers. That means that any Aetna Medicare Advantage plan will cover what Part B covers. And some plans may cover even more acupuncture visits.

If you are new to Medicare, recently moved or lost coverage, you may be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan today.

What is acupuncture treatment?

During a session, you lay on an ergonomically designed table. Small needles are placed on different points of your body to help stimulate energy flow. You are instructed not to move while the needles are inserted, and the needles stay in for up to 20 minutes.

Some practitioners also use heat, energy impulses, friction or cupping techniques.

Acupuncture can affect everyone differently. You might experience positive results after your first session. You may also require multiple sessions before healing takes place.

Is Western acupuncture the same as Chinese acupuncture?

Chinese acupuncture focuses on the body’s energy flow. It uses techniques to remove blockages in order to treat pain and other issues.

Western acupuncture follows the belief that acupuncture stimulates nerves and muscles. This can help increase the body’s natural resistance to pain.

Some practitioners use both Chinese and Western techniques.

What types of conditions does Aetna cover acupuncture treatments for?

Aetna Medicare Advantage plans may cover acupuncture if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Chronic back or neck pain (12-week minimum duration)
  • Nausea from pregnancy
  • Pain caused by knee osteoarthritis
  • Low back pain
  • Temporomandibular (TMD) disorders

Aetna typically only covers acupuncture treatments when they are medically necessary.

Experimental acupuncture treatments aren't usually covered by Aetna Medicare Advantage plans. This includes conditions like:

  • Acne
  • Allergies
  • Bell's palsy
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Phantom leg pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Smoking cessation
