With Aetna Medicare Advantage health maintenance organization (HMO) plans, you can enjoy the benefits of Original Medicare (Part A and B) and some additional benefits, such as prescription drug coverage, all in one single plan.
Do Aetna Medicare HMO plans require a referral?
Most Aetna Medicare Advantage HMO plans require you to select a primary care provider (PCP) from a nationwide network of health care professionals.
Your PCP helps coordinate most of your medical care. If more specialized treatment is necessary, your primary care provider will give you a referral to visit a specialist or hospital in the Aetna plan network.
In some limited instances – such as in an emergency – you may be able to receive out-of-network care. However, you are typically required to visit a provider in the network. Aetna offers plans with in-network coverage when you travel in the U.S.

Aetna offers a variety of Medicare Advantage plans, including several types of HMO plans.
Aetna Medicare℠ Plan (HMO)
- Provides coverage with a nationwide network of medical providers and facilities. To ensure coverage, members need to see in-network providers.
- Emergency room (ER) and urgent care coverage.
Aetna Medicare Prime Plan (HMO)
- Provides coverage with a nationwide network of medical providers and facilities. To ensure coverage, members need to see in-network providers.
- Emergency room (ER) and urgent care coverage.
- Allows out-of-network visits for emergency situations, renal dialysis in certain scenarios, or urgent care.
Aetna Medicare Plan (HMO-POS)
- Provides coverage with a nationwide network of medical providers and facilities. To ensure coverage, members need to see in-network providers.
- More flexibility to visit out-of-network providers and medical facilities, though seeing out-of-network providers generally costs more.
