Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plans
Aetna Medicare Advantage preferred provider organization (PPO) plans give you the freedom and flexibility to visit a doctor whether they’re in or out of the plan’s provider network. You’ll pay more when you choose an out-of-network provider.
You can typically see a provider without a referral from a primary care provider (PCP), as long as they accept Medicare and the Aetna plan terms. In most cases, your out-of-pocket costs may be less if you visit an in-network provider.
Do Aetna Medicare PPO plans require a referral?
With an Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan, you don’t need a referral from a PCP to see a specialist. In fact, you aren’t required to designate a PCP with an Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plan.

What do 2026 Aetna Medicare Advantage PPO plans cover?
Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans provide the benefits of Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Aetna Medicare Advantage plans also include additional benefits not covered by Original Medicare, such as prescription drug coverage (Part D).
